mommy
by Callie E. Butler

As I burst forth from your body,
a marvelous mixture of beauty and pain,
you took me in your arms,
and there I have always remained,
embraced fully in your love.
Your delicate fingers have wiped from my eyes
tears of pain and of triumph.
Your dark green eyes
share the messages of mother and daughter
words could never display.
Your cheeks have received
thousands of my kisses,
little gestures to show you my love.
Your tongue has shared
the many workings of your mind
and the teachings of a beautiful, strong woman.
With all of yourself
you have helped to construct me,
helped me to embrace and love myself,
and helped guide me as I reached for my every dream.
